"Pitaya"

An exotic fruit which can benefit patients with Type 2 diabetes is the pitaya, or dragon-fruit.
It's part of the cactus family, and the soluble fibres in its flesh helps to lower blood glucose and cholesterol levels.
The red version of the pitaya is one of the few fruits to contain betacyanins, which are powerful antioxidants that protect us against a range of health problems.
The pitaya is filling but not fattening at 202kj per 100g.
Pitaya is grown near Cairns, and is available all year round.
