PAEDIATRIC & ADOLESCENT

NeePADS offers to children and adolescents with diabetes and their families, specialised care and advice on all aspects of diabetes management, including medical, nutritional and psychological therapy.

Our philosophy is to inform and support both the individual and the family, and encourage children to grow into well adjusted, self reliant, healthy individuals who can achieve their full potential in life. A team approach ensures that diabetes management and lifestyle issues are addressed in a consistent and holistic way.

Patients can be referred to the service from general practitioners, paediatricians, other health professionals or through other hospitals.

How does it work?
When diabetes is diagnosed stabilisation and education is provided with a hospital admission depending on the current health and age of the child or adolescent. After initial education from all health care professionals, management is intensive and follow up is regular. Phone access 24 hours for insulin adjustment is provided.

If the health and age of the child or adolescent permits, we can provide stabilisation and education without the need for a hospital admission.

Ongoing care
NeePADS provides a range of educational opportunities and events for individuals, families and the extended care network. This includes:
individual appointments with all members of the health care team
education days for school age children
parent education evenings for updates and to share new information about insulin types, regimes and nutrition
grandparent and babysitter evenings for anyone wishing to learn more about diabetes
teenage outdoor camping programs with professional recreational and medical staff
help in making a smooth transition from paediatric to adult services
toddler groups
school and preschool visits to educate staff and carers about diabetes
counselling to support patients’ families through the various aspects of diabetes.
